September 1st, 2002 - Wells, Nevada

Andy:   It wouldn't be a road trip without road troubles.   The new super-van likes to super-vibrate at highway speeds.  Not good when you have thousands of miles to drive.  So we drop the van off at a Firestone in Reno, NV and go watch a movie.  3 hours later the van is "ready".  Claimed tires were out of balance.   Well, it's better but still not right - so I'm wondering if we have a bogus tire. There will be more tire store visits in our future.   Road trip lesson #1 - Ford ain't Lexus.  On a positive note, we haven't lost anything off the roof of the van yet - including the BBQ.  I'm sure the truckers on I80 wouldn't have enjoyed a Weber portagrill through their windshield.  Oh yes, and Wendy saved the day right before I nearly drove under a gas station where the clearance was too low! Our bikes wouldn't have looked pretty after that.  Time to start reading those yellow signs.

Wendy: Wooo hoooo, it's the start of our 365 day weekend!  A mostly uneventful day, spent listening to the Fellowship of the Rings (books on tape are key for roadtrips), reading, napping and watching a movie.  I have a bummer of a cold, and got a little zonked on DayQuil, making for a more interesting drive.  We're now in the middle of no where, 4 hours away from our first destination....thus starts the countdown to climbing!!!
