Wendy: We arrived in JTree yesterday afternoon, and promptly found an awesome campsite in Hidden Valley. The place is empty, and the weather is perfect for climbing. We awoke this morning to total silence and bright sun. Ahhh, to be back in the desert again! It is unseasonably cool for this time of year, but that's perfect for climbing.
9AM: Andy insists on climbing "at least 8 climbs today."
12PM: "Ok, maybe 7 climbs today. I think I have lunch coma."
4PM: "We've climbed 6 pitches, but they were good ones, dinner time?"
So we only climbed 6 pitches, but they were classics (Touch and Go, 5.9; Popes Crack, 5.9; British Airways, tr, 5.11; Ball Bearings, 5.10; Sail Away, 5.8; Westwind, 5.9). For the first time in my life I hand-jammed all the way up Popes Crack without wigging out, falling, or breathing heavily. Perfect jams, and I looked really good! I talked Andy into letting me lead Sail Away, a fun 5.8 crack with perfect protection. He whined and complained all the way up, since he has done the climb a million times in the past and was annoyed that I wanted to do it "yet again." He wasn't complaining when he lead Westwind, the climb next to Sail Away. He begrudgingly admitted that he was glad we came over to do the climbs, as they were better than we remembered. Oh yeah, and we didn't clip a single bolt all day, just climbed cracks. That must be a JTree record for us.
Andy has wheezled his way into me making dinner for the past several nights. He has some hand and foot management issues which are getting out of control. His skin is so dry it is cracking, so he keeps taking time out of activities to lather, oil, lotion and peroxide it. He volunteered to make dinner after he did his feet, but I kindly refused, seeing as how I don't want to eat some bizarre foot fungus mixed into my yummy fajita dinner. Real problem, or convenient excuse to make his wife more wifely, I'm not sure I'll ever know. I draw the line at dishes, however, and little does he know he's undoing all the lotion when he sticks his hands in cold dishwater. At times I think my husband is the most intelligent man in the world, and at others I'm just not quite so sure.
