October 8th - Our 3 Year Anniversary, Celebrated by a Desert Tour

Wendy:  Three years ago today (plus or minus a day), Andy and I got married!  We realized this a few days ago, panicking because we did not know the date.  Some clever calculating led us to conclude that we had married on a Saturday three years ago, meaning our anniversary must be on a Tuesday.  We decided to celebrate by going to dinner, staying at a nice hotel, and then driving through Palm Springs to the alternate entrance to Joshua Tree.

Step one, going to dinner.  We had some ok mex food in Joshua Tree after climbing all day yesterday, and while paying the bill noticed that our calculation was off.  Our anniversary is actually the 9th, but we neglected to factor in the leap year, so like the logical beings that we are, we decided the 8th was a better day to celebrate.

Step two, finding a "nice" hotel in the town of Yucca Valley.  The choices were sparse, and we settled on the Oasis of Eden, which advertises "theme" rooms on their sign.  Not quite sure what a "theme" room was, we bit, and were given the choice of the jungle room, the cave room, or the 50's style diner room.  Still having no idea what we were getting into, we signed up for the jungle room.  The jungle room was jungle all the way, baybee, from the separate Tarzan and Jane shower heads, to the parrots and monkeys in the trees hanging over the bed.  It was actually unbelievable how cool the room was.  All four walls and the ceiling were painted with trees and animals, and the floor was made of stone.  Andy turned on the volcano light in the middle of the night by accident, causing me to bolt out of bed as if something huge was about to happen.  It was a fun way to spend the night.

Step three, driving through Palm Springs.  I have one word for Palm Springs....hot.  Hot, hot, hot.  So hot that all we could do was park the car in the shade, make a beeline into Jamba Juice for lunch, make a beeline into the Natural History museum to sit in the air conditioning and learn about deserts, and beeline back to the car to get the heck outta town.  One sign said 114 degrees, our thermometer read 109, but either way you look at it, it was hot hot hot.  We turned the airconditioning up and drove out to the Cottonwood Springs entrance into Joshua Tree, where we saw some amazing cacti and views of the park.

All in all a fun way to spend our special day, being together the best part of all.
