October 19 - Chris and Suzi arrive, climb Scalawag

Wendy:   Ahhh, the weekend that we meet up with Chris and Suzie!  It couldn't have come soon enough, since they are so much fun to hang around.  I only wish we could see them more often...

Their flight came in at 9:40 to the Vegas airport.  9:45 and Andy and I were just getting our coffee and finishing up some grocery shopping, making us a tad late for their pick-up.  We drove 75 mph in the van, trying to get there sooner (actually we vibrated 70 mph, since when you go fast the whole van shakes like a tree in a windstorm), and finally pulled into the airport a little after 10.  The Vegas airport is, no joke, the most confusing airport in the entire world.  And that is if you have a normal sized vehicle.  It's the most confusing airport in the whole universe if you have an "oversized" vehicle like the van.  Chris called on our cell phone to say they were standing 'here', only to call back 1 minute later to say that 'here' was only 8 feet tall (our van is almost 12 feet tall with the bikes), so now they were 'there', only to call and say 'there' was too short too.  So there Andy and I are, driving wildly to get there faster, trying to negotiate the very short and poorly marked airport terminal.  We did some sort of bizarre loop, and ended up in "oversized" parking.  The problem was that we had no idea where the parking lot was relative to where Chris and Suz were.  Andy hopped out, talking to Chris on the cell until they found each other.  It was an ordeal to say the least.

We drove out to Calico basin and climbed at Moderate Mecca (that's really what it was called!).  The boys lead some fun climbs, and then I tweaked my neck so I stopped climbing and acted as a belay slave (Andy likes belay slaves, or does he just like slaves???)  for the rest of the afternoon.  Andy jumped on Scalawag, a 10b/c crack/roof (see pics below) that involved several fist jams, dangling no feet on the rock moves, and a heel hook finale.  I belayed and had no idea what was going on, only that his feet were flailing around and making me very nervous as he pulled the roof.  I then sat back and watched Chris do the route - same sequence as Andy.

Tomorrow, rest day for us and Chris and Suzi are borrowing the van to go climbing.  They better not crash it!!!
