Andy: Woke up to heavy rain, which was a disappointment since it probably meant we couldn't do the run we wanted. Mary and Phil estimated it at a whopping 1% chance that we could get on the Misahualli today. Fortunately, the river gods were kind and when we finally got a look at the river, it was flowing at a perfect level. It was a fine class III/IV run.
We then began the 3 hour drive back to the Quijos valley. We were slowly grinding our way up the twisty jungle road and then wham... the sound of bad things happening in the transmission and then the van stopped cold. Oh Oh.
Apparently this happens frequently, so Mary and Phil quickly jumped on the solution. Mary hitched the hour drive back to town where she rounded up two taxis. Within two hours we were back on the road: boats, people, and gear loaded into two small pickup truck taxis.
