December 18th - Pancake Rocks

Wendy:  Since Steve and Ian are still gone (visiting friends in Nelson), and Chris needed to run errands in town, Andy and I decided to spend a rest day driving to Punakaiki rocks (aka Pancake rocks).  Of course it is the clearest day we've had yet and we're not kayaking, funny how that works.  A short drive north of Greymouth brings us to these stunning rocks.  The cliff side has eroded, leaving behind free standing pillars of layered rock.  The waves crash against the rocks, and sea foam shoots out of holes.  Unfortunately we missed high tide, so we didn't see any of the big blow holes going off, but we did enjoy some beautiful views and a semi-ok but still British tasting lunch.  As we drove home, we studied the coast for a good surf break.  Depending on river flows, we may take a day to kayak surf if it stays beautiful and blue here.
