January 8th - Mararoa River, near Fiordland

Andy:  Our driving adventure begins.  Over the next 3 weeks we'll drive 2000km to eventually arrive in Auckland by the end of January.  Hopefully, lots of rivers in between all those miles!

Wendy: We've moved on from Queenstown to the small town of Te Anau, the largest town in the Fiordland.  As you may guess by the name, the Fiordland has lots of....fiords; the most famous being the Milford Sound.  We'll be taking sea kayaks into the Milford later this week, so today we opted for a river adventure on the Mararoa.  The book lists it as a class II-IV run, depending on the flow.  "Low and clear" is too low to run...not much info for us to gauge whether to do the run.  You can't see the run from the road, so we went off on an adventure on a river we knew little about.

Turns out it was lots of fun. The run started at the end of lake Mavora, with views of the mountains to one side, and a birch tree canyon to the other.  The water was a bright green color, almost neon green, from the mossy rocks at the bottom of the river.  The river was a fun boulder garden with no big moves.

Steve and Wendy - a breathtaking lake to begin the paddle.  Warm sun, warm water, and great scenery.

Looks like Steve is going to run into the wall, eh? Trick photography.
