January 9th - Hollyford River, near Milford Sound

Andy:  Wow - what a view!  Today's river, the Hollyford River, flows amongst the huge, snow capped spires of Fiordland National Park.  It was a low water run, but still plenty of fun in between the occasional rock bash and elbow bruise  It was a steep river (150 fpm) filled with miniature boulder gardens, small boofs, and the occasional steep chute.  Wendy opted out of the run, so it was just Steve and I with the whole river to ourselves.  Amazing.  Wendy ran along the river taking photos, so she was always there around the next bend.

We decided to make our run a little longer by doing the first 1.5km of a super hard run below our takeout.  We knew the run followed the road and eventually entered an "inescapable" gorge.  So we kept running rapids, provided we could see a pool below that we could still climb out of the river from. Unfortunately, we went one rapid too far and had our first New Zealand bush bashing experience.  Ten minutes of wading through the thickest bush imaginable and we made it back to the road!  Fortunately there are no poisonous plants or animals in New Zealand, so that made the bush bashing much less stressful

New Zealand bush is thick - Andy's happy to be back at the road.
