Andy: The Wairoa River only runs 26 days a year, as it is a dam release run, and when it runs, every hardman or hardwomen boater on the North Island comes to pay it a visit. A day on this river is basically a kiwi kayaking carnival! Steve and I would be scouting a rapid, hemming and hawing over the appropriate line, and within a few minutes enough kayakers would have crashed down every possible path through the rapid that we felt confident we'd make it through the rapid alive.
Unfortunately, Wendy is still sick, so she's laying in the sun on the side of the river today.
This rapid is aptly named "Rollercoaster"
