January 21st - Kaituna Play Hole and Hell's Gate

Wendy:  Well, the good news is that it isn't giarrdia.  The bad news is that I have a nasty case of food poisoning, and eight days after it started I'm on antibiotics and finally feeling better.  I'm still not 100%, so Andy and Steve chose to go to the Kaituna play hole, and I volunteer to be the photographer.  The play hole is a good spot for working on cartwheels (throwing the boat end over end), so the boys go at it and begin to figure out how to look cool.  I have a good time cheering them on and reading a Cosmo.  I learn that there is special tape you can buy to stick provocative clothing on your body, but besides that the Cosmo is useless.

On the way home from the wave, Andy and I make a stop at Hell's Gate, the local thermal pools.  They are naturally formed geothermal pools, and even though it is 100 degrees out there is steam rising from them.  The best one is the bubbling mud pool.  It makes a burble, burble, burble sound and looks like it comes from somewhere deep down in the earth.

Burble, burble, burble.  Boiling mud...how bizarre.

Steam rising from the hot pools.  Looks like you'd imagine Hell to look.
