January 25th - Jeff's Joy Run, Rangtaiki River

Wendy:  Today's run is the Jeff's Joy Run, a mostly class 3 run with 1 solid class 4 rapid.  The run is named after Jeff, a man in an inner tube who bopped down the run many years ago, only to be found unconscious at the bottom of the hardest rapid.  Poor guy.  The run consists of a series of boulder gardens and small drops.  We see rafters and one other group of kayakers, but for the most part are alone for the majority of the run.

I flip halfway down the big rapid, but there was plenty of time to roll up and a huge eddy to pull myself back together.  When we scouted the rapid, I told Steve and Andy I'd probably flip there, and sure enough I'm good for my word!  The bottom half of the big rapid was exciting, since you exit the eddy on a moving ramp which picks up tons of speed as you go over the final drop.  All in all, this was one of the bigger rapids I've run, and was proud when the two women in the other kayaking group walked the rapid....

This section of river is dam released, and people have been surprised by the rising water!!
