Wendy: I talked my brother into babysitting Andy for the week (they stayed in Canada for a week of helicopter skiing at the Bobbie Burns CMH Lodge), which freed me up for a girls week in New York City. My girlfriend Suzanne is a real life artist there, and she's been inviting me to come out for almost 10 years. I can't believe it took me so long to get there!
New York was a blast! My girlfriend Zona from San Diego met me there, and together we traipsed through the streets of Soho, visiting random art galleries and fun cafes. There was a video exhibition at the Gugenheim by Matthew Barney, a modern day artist. We were drawn to the show because of the use of climbing holds along the side of the Gugenheim...one of Barney's videos shows him climbing up the side of the world famous museum. I still have no idea what the exhibit meant, but it was very complex, unusual, and interesting in some bizarre and artistic way. Suzanne the certified artist also had trouble understanding it, so I didn't feel so stupid! We spent a fun morning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art wandering around a Manet and Velazquez exhibit. The exhibit examined the influence of Spanish painters on French painters, and Suzanne was really great in explaining some of the history of the time period, and why the two artists were influential. There is really nothing better then going to an art museum with an artist.
